Police probe after man is shot through door of his house

A MEMBER of a notorious family has been shot at his luxury home.

Eddie Lyons Jnr, 28, was blasted through the door of his detached villa.

Last night, doctors described his condition as serious but stable after the shooting on Tuesday night in the Carrickstone area of Cumbernauld, near Glasgow.

A neighbour in Ratho Drive, who was alerted to the drama at around 9.55pm, said: "I was in the kitchen when I heard what sounded like a gun being shot.

"The whole area was crawling with police by the time I decided to look out the window.

"It's very frightening to think that something like this has happened so close."

Detectives were yesterday carrying out door-to-door inquiries as a forensic team searched the area for clues.

The attack, which is being treated as attempted murder, is the latest in a long history of violent incidents involving the Lyons clan.

Eddie Jnr, who lives with his wife Cathie, stood trial with dad Eddie Snr and brothers Stephen and Johnny for attempted murder in 2001. They were accused of attacking Thomas McDonnell but all received not proven verdicts.

His uncle, also called Johnny, survived two murder attempts in 2003.

He was wounded in the leg by a shotgun blast and then exchanged rounds with a gunman in a second attempt on his life.

Earlier this year, police seized £63,000 at a house owned by Eddie Snr.

William Paterson admitted the cash was his and was raised from drug dealing.

He was sentenced to 30 months in prison while charges against Stephen Lyons were dropped.

Eddie Snr is the boss of a community centre which is being funded by public cash.

Glasgow City Council grant Chyrnside Community Initiative £80,000 a year

But the council have withheld half of this year's cash during an investigation into his criminal links after councillors raised concerns.

Tuesday night's shooting was the second in Cumbernauld this month.

On April 6, Ronnie Dougan was shot dead. A 26-year-old man was arrested in connection with his death in an armed operation on Tuesday night.

Police have ruled out a link between the shootings.
