Detectives in Cumbernauld are continuing their
hunt for a gunman after a man was shot in the face
on his doorstep. Twenty-eight-year-old
Edward Lyons is said to be in a stable condition
in Monklands Hospital. Police are treating
the incident as attempted murder. It was the
seventh shooting in Scotland in the last three
weeks
Ratho Drive is now the scene of
Scotland's latest shooting. This morning as daily
life continued in the quiet suburban street,
forensic experts were gathering evidence.
Just before ten o'clock last night, Edward Lyons
was gunned down at his front door. A
neighbour described how a man walking his dog
heard the gunshot. When he reached the house, he
found the 28-year-old bleeding from the face.
Detectives are now looking into Mr Lyons'
background to establish a motive for the attempt
on his life.
This is the latest in a spate of shootings this
month. Just two hours after the incident in
Cumbernauld, a gun was fired at the Glasgow home
of a family of seven.
On Sunday, Gary Docherty died from his injuries
after being shot by an airgun in Duntocher. A week
before, a schoolgirl was injured again by an
airgun in Coatbridge. Three days earlier, Ronnie
Dougan was shot dead in Torbrex Road in
Cumbernauld. The same day, Graeme Baxter was found
with fatal injuries in East Calder and at the
start of the month, a gunman burst into a family
home in Drumchapel, firing a shot at the six
adults and three children who were inside.
Official figures for offences involved firearms
and air weapons will not be published until
October but they are expected to show a rise for
the second year running. While progress is being
made in keeping the availability of weapons down,
police admit they cant be complacent. One
shooting, they say, is one too many.
